Welcome everyone! Today we are beginning a journey through the Book of Psalms. A lot of times we look at Psalms as just 150 unrelated songs or devotional quotes for coffee mugs. But the truth is, the Psalms were carefully built as a 5-part sanctuary of prayer that walks us through the entire story of God’s redemption—from creation and trial, to exile, and finally to glorious restoration.
Because 150 chapters is a huge book, we aren’t going to rush through it all in one exhausting marathon. Instead, we are taking it in 10 bite-sized sprints. Today, we start Sprint 1 (Psalms 1–18), where we explore the two ways to live and how to trust God when we are surrounded by trials.
As we read, remember: these aren't just songs of ancient Israel. They are the prayers of Jesus, and they are God’s gift to teach us how to pray with complete honesty.
Every time we open a Psalm together, we’re going to walk through it in two distinct steps:
First, we step onto The Porch. This is our welcoming, easy-entry look at the chapter. We’ll look at the general mood, summarize what’s happening in plain English, and grab one key verse to anchor our thoughts. Nobody needs to be a Bible scholar here—it’s just an open door for everyone to connect with the emotion of the text.
Then, once we have our bearings, we step into The Sanctuary. This is where we roll up our sleeves and dive deep. We’ll examine the ancient Hebrew background, uncover how the chapter points directly to Jesus Christ and His Kingdom, and challenge ourselves with real-life application and gospel conversations.
Whether you are reading the Bible for the first time or the hundredth time, there is a place for you in both rooms.
